The Austin-San Antonio Intermunicipal Commuter Rail District is planning regional commuter rail
service along MoPac on tracks that carry Union Pacific freight and Amtrak trains. This regional
rail system is being studied as one approach to easing traffic congestion on IH-35 and providing a
safe and reliable travel alternative.
- Passenger service on these tracks could eventually connect you to Georgetown, Round
Rock, Austin, Buda/Kyle, San Marcos, New Braunfels and San Antonio.
- The commuter rail system is one part of a three-step strategy to reduce congestion on IH-
35, improve freight mobility, speed NAFTA trade between Laredo and Dallas and spur
economic development in the Austin-San Antonio Corridor.
- The Rail District has made applications to the federal government to provide future
funding for the design, engineering and construction of a passenger rail system for the
Austin-San Antonio Corridor.
- Capital Metro is working with the Rail District and organizations, including the Texas
Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority
(CTRMA) and Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO), to provide
transportation alternatives our region.
